The favoured Victorian crew was comprehensively beaten by the NSW crew who rowed "long telling strokes". Further Sid Hellings was praised for "steering a splendid course, and evaded the force of the tide more than his rival coxswains": Referee 17th May 1893.

The Queenslander reported on 11th March 1893: It was reported that Mr Winter had been requested to take a seat in the boat and a new coach to be selected. The Brisbane Courier reports that "General" Jinks, an old Victorian identity, trained them.

The officials for the race were umpire, Q L Deloitte, starter William Cope and judge Joseph Lord.
