Australian School Rowing History

NSW AAGPS Head of the River – First Crew Summary

This race was rowed in four oared crews until 1910 when it was raced in eights.

In 1894, the GPS accepted the offer of Major Zennas C. Rennie of a £20 cup to be attached to the race as a perpetual trophy. Major Rennie was the general manager for Australia of the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York and was a Civil War veteran, having fought for the Union at Baton Rouge in 1862.

Until 1910 the Major Rennie Trophy, donated in 1894, was awarded for the First Four race there being no First Eight race until 1910. The trophy was thereafter presented to the winning first eight oared crews.

From 1893 to 1935 the AAGPS Head of the River regatta was held on the Parramatta River. In 1936 the races were moved to the Nepean River and were 1 ½ miles in distance. Since 1996 the schoolboy Head of the River has been held at the Sydney International Rowing Centre at Penrith over 2000m.
