History of AAGPS Head of the River Rowing Regatta

1992 NSW AAGPS Head of the River

Sydney’s Newington College earned a place in rowing history yesterday on the centenary of the annual GPS Head of the River rowing regatta by sweeping to their fourth successive victory.

Newington held off formidable challenge from St. Joseph’s College who finished only 2.14 seconds behind with King’s third. Newington completed the 1 ½ mile course on the Nepean River in 7 min 30.67 sec, slower than last year because of a slight headwind and current.

Coach Michael Morgan said the victory had not been unexpected although St. Joseph’s was regarded as the wild card. St. Joseph’s dominated earlier races, thrilling the 10,000 strong crowd, winning all four of the Fours events and finishing second behind Newington in the second eights.

Coach John Reading promised his crew would be back with a vengeance next year.
