History of AAGPS Head of the River Rowing Regatta

1961 NSW AAGPS Head of the River

45,000 See G.P.S. Eights. (Terry Smith, Sydney Morning Herald, 23 Apr 1961)

Shore continued their great rowing tradition by winning the G.P.S. Head-of-the-River for the 25th time on the Nepean yesterday.

Shore gave an immaculate display to beat Riverview by a canvas in an exciting finish after leading nearly all the way. The King’s School surprised by finishing a further 1 ¾ lengths away third. A record crowd of 45,000 watched Shore win the classic event for the second year in succession. The biggest shock of the race was the disappointing showing of Sydney high School in finishing fourth.

Shore took the lead 300 yards after the start, but Riverview and The King’s hung on for the rest of the race. At no stage did Shore lead by more than a length. Shore dropped their rating to a steady 36 strokes in the critical middle section of the race. They raised it to 39 over the final 200 yards when Riverview showed great fighting spirit to come again in a final bid.

Shore showed all the polished precision for which this school’s crew have been noted for more than 30 years. The foundation for this effortless, “striding” stroke and perfection of body form was laid by Mr. L.C. Robson, a headmaster at Shore for more than 25 years.
