1989 NSW AAGPS Head of the River

Newington favoured (Heather Smith, Sydney Morning Herald, 18 Mar 1989)

The annual Head of the River rowing regatta at Penrith today is likely to attract more than 10,000 spectators for the blue riband event, the first eights.

The crack Newington College team, unbeaten in lead-up races, almost have a mortgage on the race with St. Joseph’s, Shore, Riverview and Kings most likely to fight out the minor placings.

I tis believed Newington will go into the regatta with either a former US Olympic racing shell or an imported Italian shell.

They are coached by Sydney Rowing Club’s Michael Morgan, a member of the 1968 Australian Olympic eights crew, who won a silver medal in Mexico City. Newington’s reserve team is alo tipped to take out the second eights.

Organisers came under pressure to reduce the length of the eights’ race, currently rowed over 2,400m, to the Olympic standard distance of 2,000m but have not made any changes to the event this year.
