The 1949 SA Head of the River featured the following events on the Torrens Lake:

- First Eight

- Open Tub Fours (Slides)

- Under 16 Tub Fours (Slides)

- Under 15 Tub Fours (Slides)

The Advertiser reported that St. Peter's College won by three-quarters of a length over Prince Alfred College to win its 4th-straight Gosse Shield for First Eights. St. Peter's won all events on the programme except the Under 15 Tub Four, who was won by Adelaide High School.

First Eight:

The Advertiser wrote of St. Peter's College winning the First Eight yet again at the 1949 SA Head of the River:

"St. Peter's gained its break in the final when PAC momentarily appeared to tire about half-way through the race. Clark then took his crew from behind to a canvas lead, which had increased to three-quarters of a length at the Morphett Street Bridge. PAC made a drive at Long's Point and narrowed the margin to half a length. However. St. Peter's finished too strongly and went on to win by three quarters of a length. The race appeared to be faster than the official time of 2 min 58 2-5 sec."
