History of Artemis Rowing Club
< Back to home page
Artemis was a short lived rowing club based in Geelong which operated out of the old Geelong Rowing Association boatshed. It was formed by Dr Lou Renouf. Lou was the father of Mary Renouf, a Victorian and Australian representative sculler at the time of formation.
By way of background, prior to the amalgamation of the Corio Bay Ladies Rowing Club and Corio Bay Rowing Club, Mary Renouf and other prominent Geelong women rowers such as Leisa Patterson raced for Corio Bay Ladies Rowing Club and were coached by the Late Bob Morell OAM.
David Uren in his book A Good Course, 150 years of the Corio Bay Rowing Club, explained the establishment of the club quite simply as follows. “… Mary Renouf’s father Lou had a falling out with Bob Morell and he set up a new women’s rowing Club in Geelong, Artemis.” Mary Renouf then started racing under the Artemis Rowing Club colours up to and including 1982 and was then coached by Terry Poole.
Interestingly in her last season in 1983, Mary raced under the Corio Bay Rowing Club colours, after the amalgamation of CBLRC and CBRC.
