The Advertiser and Register wrote of the final of the First Eight's in 1931 between Scotch College and St. Peter's College:
"Scotch got away to a good start from St. Peter's. The blues rapidly got on terms. Over the first quarter of a mile the St. Peter's crew were slightly ahead, and coming to the Morphett Street Bridge. Scotch were half a length behind. Scotch did not seem to be rowing with much life. St. Peter's boys the other hand, were rowing strongly. Nicholls smartened the pace up, and got a length clear at the Mercantile Shed. From then on it was St.Peter's race. Scotch attempted a spurt without avail. St. Peter's won in great style by three lengths."
