History of Ballarat Head of the Lake rowing regatta

1935 Ballarat Head of the Lake

This race was conducted on Saturday 27th April 1935 on Lake Wendouree in conjunction with a race for second crews and an Old Boys race. Ballarat Grammar was successful in these races.

This year saw the inclusion of third and fourth crews to the Head of the Lake program on the Saturday.

Ballarat Grammar School took out the Head of the Lake for the third year in succession with a very strong performance in difficult conditions.

At last the day of days dawned and a smart north westerly was blowing and amongst the rowers a certain amount of anxiety prevailed. By 3 o’clock the crowd had reached its height and as the three crews left their respective sheds they were greeted with a storm of cheers from their supporters. Then the crews lined up for the start. St.Pat’s had the centre station and got away to a fair start, but Grammar soon took the lead. St.Pat’s and Ballarat College were fighting it out for second place. At the half mile, St.Pat’s had fallen back to third, about six lengths behind Grammar, and a length behind College. It looked as though the very rough water was too much for the crew, but then St.Pat’s put in a brilliant burst and soon overtook College. Having overtaken the College crew St.Pat’s went after Grammar. St.Pat’s were now rowing splendidly their blade work and body swing being perfect. The crew were gaining on Grammar, but the Grammar boys had gained too much at the start and when the finishing gun sounded St.Pat’s were about two lengths behind Grammar with College a further length away. St.Pat’s had rowed a game race considering the very unfavourable conditions, but, no doubt Grammar was the better crew. (Source SPCB Annual 1935-36, page 78)
