Australians at 1999 Henley Royal Regatta


Thames Challenge Cup

Round 3

 

Sydney Rowing Club - J. J. Crowley (b), S. R. G. Gorman, M. P. Burke, A. C. E. Webster, P. J. D. Willis, B. A. F. Hegerty, B. K. Wyllie, A.W. A. Koch (s), D. M. Whetton (c)

In the first round, Sydney defeated Marlow Rowing Club by 1 1/2 lengths. In the second round Sydney disposed of Molesey Boat Club B crew by 1 1/4 lengths. In the quarter finals, it was a tough race against Crabtree Boat Club. The Henley Regatta Records 1995-99 reported as follows. Both crews rowed stroke for stroke throughout and it was not until the mile that Crabtree managed to lead by more than half a length. Sydney made one last challenge at the last signal but Crabtree were well up to it and came homeworthy winners by a length and a quarter.


Temple Challenge Cup

Round 3


St. Andrew's College, Sydney - J. J. Marsh (b), A. W. J. Cameron, A. J. Wilkinson, A. K. M. Murray, W. A. Main, J. W. Cape, T. R. Cohen, T. H. Wilcox (s), D. O. McCosker (c)

In round one, the Australian crew from St Andrews College defeated Bath University easily. Again they won the second round against Leeds University by 1 1/2 lengths. In the third round the Australian met their match against Cambridge University who won by three lengths. Cambridge went onto win this Challenge Cup.

Southport School - Round 3

 

St. Peter's College (SA) - A. L. Wood (b), E. J. Scammell, H. S. MacGillivray, A. A. T. Walsh, J. J. Smit, R. C. Starling, H. W. Shannon, J. H. T. Walsh (s), W. T. A. McLachlan (c)

This Adelaide school raced very well defeating Bedford School by 1/2 length in the first round, Tabor Academy (USA) by 4 1/4 lengths in the second round, and St Joseph's Prepatory USA in the third  by 2 1/4 lengths. They were then matched with the local favourites St Paul's School in the semi-final which they won by 2 lengths. In the final, English school St Edward's School led the Australians from the start and rated high at 42 strokes per minute. They led by a length and a quarter at the first signal and at the Barrier. The Australians could not match their pace and the final margin was 2 3/4 lengths.

The Southport School (QLD) - M. G. C. Davis, W. R. Seacombe, J. R. Dean, J. M. Witty, D. R. Smith, B. M. Morgan, E. C. Arendsen, M. S. Campbell (s), H. E. Pohl (c)

The Queenslanders defeated the American North Allegheny High School by 4 1/4 lengths in the first round. In the second round they dispatched the South Africans from St Stithan's College by 1 1/4 lengths. The third round was a great battle with a local school Abingdon School. The Henley Regatta Records 1995-99 reported as follows. The crews were level at the first signal. Southport School led by a canvas at the Barrier and by four feet at Fawley. Here a well timed push by Abingdon gave them the lead. They continued to row at a higher rate of striking and although hard pressed to the finish, held onto win by a third of a length.

Sydney Rowing Club - B. W. H. Tragear, C. R. Millet, J. J. Nalty, O. W. B. Harding (s)

Sydney were given a bye in their first round and were beaten by eventual finalists Burway Rowing Club & Walton Rowing Club composite crew by 3 lengths in Round 2.

The Southport School - J. R. Fyfe, L. I. Seccombe, C. P. Sanderson, C. M. Higgins (s)

Southport were also given a bye in the first round but were also beaten in the second round by Star Club & Peterborough City Rowing Club, by 4 ¾ lengths in Round 2. 


Visitors' Challenge Cup

Round 2

 

The Southport School (QLD) - E. C. Arendsen (b—steers), J. R. Dean, D. R. Smith, M. S. Campbell (s), 

 These schoolboys defeated Kingston Grammar School in the first round by 1 length. They were no match for Imperial College London in the second round who won easily.


Silver Goblets and Nickalls' Challenge Cup

Sydney - Round 2
Huon - Round 3
NSWIS - Runners-up

 

Sydney Rowing Club (NSW) - Peter J. Murphy (b) & Daniel J. Burke (s)

 Sydney started well with an easy win against the Upper Thames combination of Heard & Jacobs. They were defeated by 2 lengths by the eventual winners in the second round, Williams and Dennis.

Huon Rowing Club (TAS) - Andrew J. Butler (b) & Matt B. Russell (s) 

The lightweights from Huon had an east first round win over Trott & Wallis from Canterbury Rowing Club New Zealand. In the second round they had a 4 1/2 length win over Gillard and Mulkerrins from the Star Club. They then met Weightman & Scott in the third round losing by 3 1/4 lengths. They did very well considering the standard of the competition.

NSW Institute of Sport - David J. Weightman (s) & Robert G. Scott (b)

The two selected pairs in the draw were this pair and the British team pair of Williams & Dennis. Both ended up in the final. The final was a dominating race by the British pair, taking the lead early and increasing their lead throughout. The final margin was3 1/4 lengths.

Queensland Academy of Sport - Marcus D Free

 Marcus had a 1/2 length win over King of the Kingston Rowing Club in the first round. Greg Searle of of the Molesey Rowing Club easily defeated him in the second round.


Princess Royal Challenge Cup

Round 1

 

University of Technology, Sydney - Christine Gosling

 Christine was easily defeated by Mowbray of the Thames Rowing Club in the first round.
