Thames Challenge Cup

Semi-finalist

 

Sydney Rowing Club - M. J. Bourke, C. M. Daish, H. R. Willoughby, N. P. Baxter, R. S. Plater, J. P. Beezer, B. K. Wyllie, R. B. Toepfer (s), D. M. Whetton (c)

 Round 1 was a victory over the City of Oxford Rowing Club by 3 lengths. The second round produced a similar result against Auriol Kensington Rowing Club with a margin of 3 1/2 lengths. The margin tightened to 2 1/4 lengths in the third round when Sydney defeated Commercial Rowing Club of Ireland. The semi-final against Bowbridge Rowing Club was a ripper race other than Sydney went down by 1/2 length. Sydney led to the Barrier. At Fawley, striking 36 strokes per minute, Sydney led by half a length with Bowbridge rating three points higher. Passing Remenham, Bowbridge raised their rate to 40 and at the mile both crews were level. Sydney fought back but Bowbridge rating 40 went onto win by 1/2 length.



Stewards' Challenge Cup

Mercantile Rowing Club and Melbourne University Rowing Club - Nick D. Green, Michael S. McKay, Drew C. Ginn, James B. Tomkins (s), 

The 1996 Olympic Champions were defeated by Leander (Cracknell, Foster, Pinsent and Redgrave) by 1 length.


Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup

Round 1

 

Prince Alfred College - J. D. Roberts (b), A. K. Stiltz, A. D. Grogan, C. D. M. Hurburgh, T. L. Collins, N. J. Phelps, S. G. Thomas, H. L. Rowland, A. J. Taylor (c), 

 St Paul's School defeated the South Australians by 1 3/4 lengths.


Fawley Challenge Cup

The Henley Regatta Records 1995-99 reported on Sydney's races as follows.

On Saturday morning Sydney Rowing Club led Pangbourne College marginally from the start. They were leading by half a length at the half mile and maintained this to the finish. ...In the first semi-final, on Saturday evening Wycliffe College gradually took control in their race against Sydney Rowing Club, Australia. By the mile they had established a commanding lead which they held to the finish.

Edith Cowan University Perth Rowing Club (WA) - A Tristan Pascall

In a magnificent round one race against former champion and World Champion Peter Haining of the UK, Tristan won by only one foot. The Henley Regatta Records 1995-99 reported the race as follows. The outstanding race on the first day was Pascall's victory by one foot over Haining. The latter led by a canvas at the Barrier and by a length at Fawley. He continued to go away and led by three lengths at the mile. His lead was two lengths at the last signal. Pascall now sprinted to the finish sculling at 39 strokes per minute with Haining unable to make an effec­tive response, Pascall winning, on the line by a foot. 

The second round against Wake Tideway Scullers was won by 1 1/2 lengths. Pascall met the eventual winner Amercian J W Koven from Brown University in the third round. Koven was too good for the West Australian and his campaign ended.

Banks Rowing Club (VIC) - D. A. K. Linley 

 Linley's Henley experience finished in the first round when Canadian K R Beatty of the Hanlan Boat Club defeated him by 2 lengths.

Mercantile Rowing Club (VIC) - Georgina Douglas

 Douglas had a good start with an easy win over Woolf of the Thames Rowing Club. In the second round, she met former champion Guinn Batten and won by 3/4 length. in the semi-final, Douglas had an easy win over S K Watts. The final was a match against Swedish Olympic finalist Maria Brandin. Brandin led by a length at the first signal and by half a length at Fawley. From here she drew away to lead by a length at the three quarter mile, a length and a quarter at the mile, and by 2 lengths at the last signal. The final margin was 1 3/4 lengths.


Women's Invitational Eights

Round 1

 

Australian Institute of Sport - Rachael Taylor (b), Angela Holbeck, Amy Safe, Anna Ozolins,  Jodie Winter, Kate Slatter, Karina Weiland, Bronwyn Thompson (S), Katie Foulkes (c), 

 The Australian eight met the USA eight and winners in the first round of the event and lost by only 1/2 length. The race was always close and the Americans always led. This was the first time that this event had been conducted.
