Double Sculls Challenge Cup

Champions - margin 2 feet

Tweed Heads Rowing Club (QLD) and Melbourne University Boat Club (VIC) - Marcus D. Free (b), Peter T. Antonie (s)

This was Peter Antonie's second win at Henley having won in 1988 in the Australian Quad Scull. The Henley Regatta Record reported as follows. There were three outstanding doubles who were selected, Cracknell and Thatcher, Free and Antonie from Australia and Jamieson and Gleeson from the U.S.A. All sculled through to the semi-finals and were joined in them by West and Cassidy.  .....  The final provided yet another classic encounter between well-matched doubles. Jamieson and Gleeson led by one length at the first signal and maintained this lead right up to the mile and an eighth. Here Free and Antonie mounted a massive assault. They raised their rate and began to close, the Americans raised their rate to 39 but the Australians, finishing at 45, just got ahead in the last stroke to win by two feet.
