Australians at 1922 Henley Royal Regatta
Diamond Challenge Sculls
Semi-finalist
Arthur Baynes (QLD)
Jack Pritchard in his history Rowing in Queensland 1880-1995 reported that Baynes was trained by professional sculler and boatman George Towns of Sydney. Pritchard further reported on the racing as follows: In the Diamond Sculls, A. Baynes was defeated in the semi-final by Hoover [W M Hoover], the American champion sculler, by three lengths. Baynes had the prettier style but lacked the American pace. Hoover went on to win the Diamond Sculls, defeating Beresford [Jack Beresford] the English champion.
