Dr Graham Mahony in a speech on Aquinas Rowing 1960-64 given in November 2025 described the race as follows. “For the main event, on three occasions crews from the centre of the course drifted across and crowded Aquinas into the starting buoy. Aquinas was then told to row between the course proper and the embankment.  An even start saw no more than a canvas between all crews at the quarter mile. Then Aquinas suddenly had a half-length clear.  A steady 35 rating with beautiful catch and drive now edged the red and blacks a length clear of Christ Church, Scotch and Guildford on even terms.  So it was, at the half mile. At the Brewery, Christ Church unwound a superb burst to take them to victory with Aquinas College second and Guildford third.”
