Head of Schoolgirls Rowing Regatta History

2000 VIC Head of Schoolgirls' Regatta

MLC was the host school for the regatta this year and drew most of the 230 volunteers required to run the regatta from their alumni and community. MLC hosted the very first regatta in 1985 and then again in 1990. This was their third hosting of this regatta.

MLC Principal Rosa Storelli in her welcome noted that the regatta is now reputed to be the largest regatta in the Southern Hemisphere with nearing 1500 competitors. Whether this was correct or not, she correctly noted that it showcased the enormous physical prowess of so many young women.

The regatta continues to one of the largest held in Australia with 1474 girls from 41 schools in Victoria.

The regatta now commenced on Saturday at 8am and finished at 5.30pm with a race every three minutes. Sunday was able to still finish at 3pm but it required an 8am start with races every three minutes.

Sykes Racing became the naming rights sponsor for the regatta and maintained their important support of the regatta for many years to come.
