1961 SATIS Head of the River

Derwent River - Saturday 8th April 1961

**

1961 was the first year that a lightweight four was introduced into the Head of the River programme, in which no crew member could exceed 9 stone, 7 pounds (approximately 60 kilograms).

**

First Eight:

The Friends' School retained the Golden Fleece Cup for the fourth year-in-a-row.

First Four:

The Friends' School won over Launceston Church Grammar and Hutchins School.

Lightweight Four:

Hutchins School took out the inaugural race over St. Virgil's College and Launceston Church Grammar.

Second Four:

Launceston Church Grammar won with Hutchins School in second.

Third Four:

Hutchins School won with Launceston Grammar in second.

Fourth Four:

Launceston Church Grammar beat St. Virgil's College in second and Hutchins School in third.

Fifth Four:

Hutchins School 2 beat Launceston Church Grammar and Hutchins School 1 in third.

Hutchins should have finished second but stopped rowing when the gun sounded to acknowledge Friends had crossed the line. Launceston Grammar continued and finished a canvas ahead of Hutchins.
