2025 World Under 19 Championships –Trakai, LTU

A comprehensive set of images of the Australian crews can be found on the Australian Rowing Images website through this link.

The World Under 19 Championships were conducted in August 2025 on Lake Galve, Lithuania, finishing on the weekend of the 9th and 10th August.

As it was a non-Olympic year, racing at this regatta was not be combined with non-Olympic or U23 events.

Following a comprehensive selection trial, Rowing Australia reported Had of Pathways Jason Lane as saying: “The process this week was really thorough. We've got a really good team moving forward. There are some great young athletes here who have the potential to race at Under 19's [World Championships] and deliver strong results.”

The team was led by returning gold medallists Tomas and Matias Moloney, who raced again in the Men's Four. They were joined by the returning Lucy Yabsley, rowing in the Women's Double Scull. Double Under 19 Beach Sprint medallist Astrid Thomas swapped sand for flat water as she raced in the Women's Single Scull.

Results were headed by Western Australians Lachlan Brown and Jack Hansen-Knarhoi, who led from the start of the race, before being overtaken by a GB pair featuring 2024 World Champion and erg world record holder Alp Karadogan.  Other A-Final appearances included the Men's Four, who finished 5th in a tightly contested race, and the Women's Eight, who finished 6th in a race where less than 7 seconds covered the field from 1st to 6th.

B-Finalists included the Men's Quad Scull, finishing 4th, less than a second off a medal. The Men's Double Scull fought to 4th whilst managing illness throughout the week, and the Women's Double Scull finished 5th.

Astrid Thomas finished 2nd in the D Final, placing in the top 20 in the world.

After the racing was done, Jason Lane commented, "This is a stepping stone… until you’re in the fire, you don’t really appreciate it. Our crews were competitive, and they now understand what it’s like racing at the top end of the field. It’s the beginning of a journey, not the end. We’ve got to understand what we need to do as a country to keep moving forward and keep working our principles of how we row, how we train, and keep making sure these athletes are developing and putting themselves at the front of the fields in whatever category we’re racing in, from Under 19 through to the Seniors.

Medal Standings

A full copy of the medal standings can be found through this link. As usual, Great Britain headed the list with Germany close behind. However it was the Greek team which also performed excellently with four medals including two gold.
