2026 World Championships -Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Selection was based on trials in Australia and Italy and the results of World Cup III in Lucerne from 26-28 June where both the Senior Australian Rowing Team (ART) and ‘Australia A’ teams competed. After an average performance at the senior World Championships in 2025, the team sought far better results.
After Lucerne, the men’s team trained and went final trials on Lake Varese from the AIS European Training Centre (ETC) at Gavirate, Italy. The women’s team flew back to Australia for training and final trials from the Hancock Prospecting Women's National Training Centre on the Nepean River at Penrith, Sydney. The para rowing Team returned to Australia where the squad resumed training between the Reinhold Batschi National Training Centre at Lake Burley Griffin and on the Gold Coast.
After the championships, High Performance Director Paul Thompson MBE summed up as follows. "All the crews were magnificent and gave their all. They can be very proud with what they achieved. Eighteen rowers have come away from the championships with medals from five medal boats. The boats behind the medal boats were all competitive and we have built some very good momentum to take us into next year's LA2028 Qualifying regatta. The foundations laid since Paris are a real credit to Head Coaches Chris O'Brien, James Harris and James Loveday along with our dedicated Performance Support teams.”
One of the highlights of the regatta was the men's eight final. The Australians finished with a bronze in a race where the first three crews broke the worlds best time. Sadly our women's eight had to settle for a strong win in the B final after finishing third in the heat and being pushed out of the final by a faster time in the other heat.
Medal Standings

Given that Australia did not win a gold medal and finished with 3 silver and 2 bronze medals, it was ranked thirteenth, but equal fourth on total medal count.
Victories for the Netherlands in the men’s eight and mixed double sculls left the host nation on top of the medal table at these Championships. Of equal interest, Germany is now level with Great Britain on top of the all-time medal table with 86 gold medals; Germany also leads the overall medal standings with 247 World Rowing Championships medals in total, ahead of 225 for Great Britain.
