2025 World Under 23 Championships—Poznań Poland

A comprehensive set of images of the Australian crews at this regatta by photographer Benedict Tufnell can be found on the Australian Rowing Images website.

The World Under 23 Championships were conducted on the Malta Regatta Course, 23-27 July 2025, Poznań, Poland. Australia was well represented including for the first time, in PR3 events.

Prior to the event commencing, Pathways Head Coach Jason Lane stated that “Our goal is always to make as many A-finals as possible. But more than anything, we want every crew to cross the line knowing they gave it everything. If we do that, the results will take care of themselves.” Sadly the results were overall disappointing with only 6 of our 11 crews/scullers making A finals and 2 of these were first and finals.

The Australian highlights were of course Sam Stunnell winning the PR3 scull in the inaugural running of this event, and Romy Cantwell taking bronze in the women's scull.

A highlight of the regatta was also in the women's scull with the winning Swiss sculler Aurelia-Maxima Janzen’s taking her fifth straight medal at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships, following another gold in 2023 and three silvers. The Swiss sculler is now tied with USA rower Kendall Chase as the second individual to win five world under 23 medals; the only person to win more is Italian coxswain Filippo Wiesenfeld, with a total of six.

Selection

The selection trials were conducted at Penrith in conjunction with the senior selection trials. Again the later US selections took place to enable US college rowers to participate. Also several Australian based rowers joined the selection process. This has been an excellent process for keeping these rowers in the mix for senior selection in subsequent years. Our senior team bears testament to this process with many former US college athletes now part of the senior squad.

Medal Standing

Australia finished well in equal seventh place using a gold medal ranking and equal eighth by total medal ranking. Germany finished with the largest number of medals taking 5 silver and 5 bronze. Follow this link for the full medal standings.
