2025 World University Games – Rhine-Ruhr, Germany

These championships were conducted in Rhine-Ruhr (Duisburg) Germany from on 16-27 July 2025. There were 234 medal events over 18 sports. Japan took first place in the medal table with 79 medals, including 34 golds. Interestingly, rowing was one of the sports with sell out crowds. Sadly the Australian rowing team did not feature in the medal count.

Geoff Northam in his jury report summed up the event as follows: The FISU World University Summer Games were held over two weeks in the Berlin and the Rhine-Ruhr regions of Germany, with the rowing element of the games held in the Duisberg Regatta Bahn sports complex . The rowing race program was scheduled for the final three days of the Games period (25-27 July 2025), which coincided with the World Rowing Under 23 Championships at Poznan Poland. The FISU rowing regatta is normally attended by national team Under 23 rowers and was expected to result in a reduced attendance at the FISU regatta. However, to the contrary entries were higher than normal, possibly because the absence of Under 23 national team rowers opened up the possibilities for rowers to achieve a podium finish outcome at the FISU regatta. ... The Duisburg Regattabahn course was created through the donation of an old quarry site owned by the Krupp family (a large industrial organisation today) to the Duisburg city on the condition that the site was developed into a sports park for the people of Duisberg. The level of investment in the sports park has been significant. ... The regatta competition schedule conformed to the new FISA progression system where repechage events are no longer used. This allowed the regatta to be compressed to 3 days duration in line with FISA objections. This meant day 1 included all heats, and where entries were greater than 24 crews quarterfinals at the end of the first day. Day 2 included all semi finals, and a number of B/C/D/E finals to reduce the number of finals the following day. Day 3 started with the remainder of B/C/D/E finals, followed by all A finals.
