Jack Stewart

Albert Park Rowing Club, now Albert Park South Melbourne Rowing Club (VIC)

John Stewart was born in Whangaroa, New Zealand and lived at 44 Merton St, Albert Park.

‘Jack’ joined the Albert Park club during the season of 1914-15, and his first win for the club was in the maiden four at Nagambie in December 1914. Selected for the maiden eight early in 1915, Jack competed in and won the Championship Eight that same year.

Aged 29, Jack was a bandsaw filer who enlisted on 10th October, 1916. Embarking with crewmate Bill Steinle, Jack was transferred to the Australian Flying Corps together with Bill. He served in England, receiving two blue chevrons in February 1918 and was promoted to 1st Aircraftman in June that same year. Jack returned to Australia in May 1919.
