Robert L Wickenden
Glebe Rowing Club (NSW) then Sydney Rowing Club (NSW)
Bob commenced his rowing career with the Glebe Rowing Club where he learned hos rowing craft. He is noted in the Club's history as one of their only twelve oarsmen racing in 1977 but they were very successful in third grade events that season. In 1978 he came to prominence figuring in second place at both the NSW and National Championships in second grade events.
Clearly his ambitions were higher than second grade events and so joined the in form club at that time, namely Sydney Rowing Club. By 1981, he was a NSW and Victorian Eight Oared Champion. He repeated the NSW Championship in 1982 and 1983.
He caught the eyes of the NSW selectors in 1982 being selected into the NSW King's Cup squad. Sadly he had to settle with the emergency position that year.
Bob retired from elite rowing at the conclusion of the 1983 season.
As an aside Bob was a great squash player who represented NSW in that sport.
