Peter Scanes

Mercantile Rowing Club (VIC)

The following obituary appeared in the Club's 1972-73 annual report regarding the tragic death of rower Peter Scanes in April 1973.

Peter Scanes, who was tragically killed in a road accident last April, joined the Club in January, 1972, shortly after his arrival from London, where he had been a member of the Quintin Boat Club.

He found a seat in the Maiden Eight almost at once and won several events in this crew. He subsequently was selected for the Lightweight Senior Eight, and this crew represented the Club at the State Championship.

This season his interest turned to sculling, and he was often to be seen training in his racing shell.

The Club has lost a cheerful, humorous and likeable young man, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family in their loss.
