J Harvie Picken

Mercantile Rowing Club (VIC)

Harvie Picken joined the Club in the early years of this century and for a number of years was a regular attendant competing in regatta and Club races. Shortly after winning a senior eight in the early 1920's, he found that business commitments did not allow him sufficient time to train for racing, and be became for many years a regular week-end rower. For a number of years he was associated with the Picken-Marsh Combination Eights, and on the death of the late Tom Marsh he joined with the late M. S. Williams in sponsoring the PickenWilliams Combination Eights.

Harvie took a keen interest in Club matters and was a generous donor to affairs of the club. With advancing years and failing health, we rarely saw him in recent years, but he retained his interest in the Club until the end.

Harvie was elected an honorary life member of the Club in 1947.
