Karlie Payne
University of Western Australia Boat Club (WA)
The following was extracted from a newsletter of UWABC of 11th July advertising that a boat would named in Karlie's honour.
Karlie joined the club as a novice after signing up at UWA Open Day in 2010. She quickly emerged as a dedicated leader, serving as Assistant Secretary in 2011, Secretary and Co-Captain of the UWA Australian University Games team in 2012, and Club Captain from 2013 to 2016.
Working alongside then-President, Karlie played a key role in stabilising and expanding the highly successful Shenton College rowing program, which has become one of the club's most significant community pathways into the sport. She was instrumental in rebuilding the Masters squad in 2013, helping broaden the club beyond its traditional undergraduate focus and fostering a more diverse and inclusive membership.
In 2017, Karlie became Vice-President (Alumi Relations), leading the club's alumni engagement and playing a central role in organising the club's 2019 Centenary celebrations. She coordinated alumni initiatives and hosted a series of highly successful events that reconnected generations of former members with the club and celebrated its rich history. In recognition of her outstanding leadership and sustained service, Karlie was awarded Life Membership in 2018.
Over more than a decade of service, Karlie's contribution has spanned almost every aspect of club life - from administration, coaching, governance, leadership to community participation and alumni engagement. Her commitment has helped shape the modern UWA Boat Club and strengthen its community for future generations.
