Samantha (Samy) Morton van Eybergen

Coming from a background in swimming, where she was awarded a scholarship to the Division 1 NCAA programme at Tulane University and swam at the Swimming World Cup, Samy Morton van Eybergen had had little exposure to rowing, other than a cross training exercise which led to her taking  the Hong Kong National 2k erg record.

It was only during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Morton had decided that her time in competitive swimming was done, that she decided to pursue her rowing potential. After reaching out to a number of coaches at American universities, she was awarded a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned Academic and First All Ivy honours, along with equivalent CRCA honours in 2023. In her time at Penn, Samy also represented Australia at U23 level, winning the Coxed Four at the 2022 World Rowing U23 Championships.

After her graduation from Penn, she moved to the National Training Centre at Penrith, and was nominated to both the Australian Rowing Team and the Australian Olympic team for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Samy rowed in the eight that placed second at World Cup 3, and won the B Final in the pair. From these performances, she was selected as the sweep spare for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Post Paris, she took up a place at Hughes Hall, Cambridge to study Bioscience Enterprise.  At Cambridge, Samy made an immediate impact on the squad, and stroked the winning CUBC women’s crew against Oxford, winning by two and a half lengths in a race which saw umpire Sir Mathew Pinsent stop then re-start the race after a clash disrupted the crews.
