Emily, now Emily Carmody, started rowing at Ballarat Grammar School which then was located at Wendouree Ballarat boatshed. She was inspired by seeing 1996 Atlanta Olympian Anthony Edwards around the shed and progressed to club rowing in the same manner as he had done. Whilst primarily a Wendouree Ballarat Rowing Club member, Emily rowed extensively at Mercs.
Emily regards the highlight of her career as “the 2001 Women’s eight gold at the Lake of the Gods, the Rotsee in Lucerne”. It was the first ever medal for an Australian women’s eight at a World Championships. Emily also tells the story that “the cox box stopped working half way down the course so it was lucky we all knew the race plan!” Her other highlight was of course the 2005 Women’s eight gold at World Championships in Gifu Japan. Locally, Emily always enjoyed the Interstate races and in particular, the 2005 Victorian crew which raced excellently.
Even with her great results, she regards the best thing that she got out of rowing was the great and ongoing friendships made with crew mates along the journey.
