Garth Lucas

University of Western Australia Boat Club (WA)

The following was extracted from a newsletter of the UWABC noting the naming of a boat in honour of Garth.

Garth is one of the most influential modern leaders in the history of the club. Joining as a novice in 2005, he quickly progressed through both the rowing and administrative ranks, serving as Registrar in 2006 before being elected Captain in 2007.

Garth championed a long-term program of reform. His priorities included rebuilding the club's financial sustainability, rebuilding the fleet, expanding membership beyond the traditional university cohort, developing learn-to-row and community rowing programs, strengthening alumni engagement, and establishing Masters rowing as a permanent part of the club.

As President from 2011, Garth led an overhaul of the club's governance and management. He established the club's Board, introduced long-term financial and strategic planning and strengthened relationships with Rowing WA, transforming the club from a student committee into a professionally governed sporting organisation supporting more than 250 members.

Beyond governance, Garth's greatest legacy is cultural. He introduced long-service recognition pins, fostered a unified club identity, and built an environment that balanced high-performance rowing with broad participation. He remained closely involved following his Presidency, and his influence continues today as a long-serving Board member.

Garth was a leader who laid the foundations for the club's modern era of sustained success and organisational stability.
