Elizabeth F 'Lizzie' Latchford

Albert Park Ladies Rowing Club (VIC)

Lizzie Latchford was a founding member of the Albert Park Ladies Rowing Club which was formed in 1908. She is often mention in the same sentence as the Founder of that club Cassie Woolley. On the silver anniversary of the founding of the club in 1933, she was showered with gifts for her work.

By at least 1924, Lizzie was Captain of Albert Park Ladies for 24 years and she had the privilege of presenting the ULVA Cup in 1925 when the Australian Championships were hosted by Victoria (and largely by her Club).

Upon the formation of the Victorian Ladies Rowing Association, Lizzie took a strong interest and was a Vice-President until her death in 1935. The minutes of the July meeting of this Association recorded a minutes silence and that the "President spoke in very high terms of Miss Latchford stating that we had lost aa wonderful woman."

The Albert Park Ladies Rowing Club held a memorial race in her honour in 1935-36 opening day.

The following obituary appeared in an unknown newspaper and shows the breadth of her other interests.
