Herbert E Jones

South Melbourne Rowing Club (VIC) now Albert Park South Melbourne Rowing Club (VIC)

Herbert Evan Jones was born in Benalla and lived at 64 Park Rd, Middle Park.

A member of the South Melbourne club, he was a tailor, aged 21, with no recorded wins.

Herbert enlisted on 18th January, 1915 as a corporal and was sent to the 21st Battalion. He was to go to Gallipoli, but was hospitalized with appendicitis, pneumonia and influenza between September and March 1916. 

When he finally recovered in April, he was sent to the 60th Battalion. In June he reverted to the ranks and embarked for France.

When he arrived at Fromelles, he went missing in action on the first day of the Australian engagement on 19th July, 1916. Herbert has no known grave, and is remembered in the VC corner at the Australian Cemetery Memorial in Fromelles, France.
