Herbert (Herb) W T Davis

Mercantile Rowing Club (VIC)

A pioneer of the Club and one of the Club's first champion oarsmen. His obituary in the Club's 1943-44 annual report was as follows.

Mr. H. W. T. Davis, who died suddenly in London on 17th March, 1944, rowed in the winning Victorian eight of 1895. In the same year he stroked the Mercantile crew which won the Senior Fours at Ballarat and Barwon regattas, and the Victorian Championship.

Other members of the four were R. E. Dawson, now of Whittlesea (bow), the late A. B. Sloan (2), and the late H. Lindgren (3).

The late Sid. Edwards, who coached many of Mercantile's best crews, said that this was the fastest four-oared crew he had ever seen.

Mr. Davis was manager of an insurance company in the Far East for many years, and was actively assisting with the war effort in London at the time of his death.
