Sir Roderick H Carnegie AC
Melbourne University Boat Club (VIC and Oxford University Boat Club (UK)
27 November 1932 – 14 July 2024
Sir Roderick Carnegie AC was a giant of the Australian mining industry whose endeavours stretched well beyond that industry. This is perhaps best summarised by the citation for his Companion of the Order of Australia award in 2003:
In recognition of service to the promotion of innovative leadership and to the development of competitive practices in business, both national and international, and to the community, particularly in the health and arts fields.
His knighthood was in recognition of his service to industry.
There is ample material for those interested on his interesting and achievement filled life elsewhere, however this is however a rowing profile.
Sir Roderick commenced his rowing at Geelong Grammar before then rowing at the Australian University Championships for Melbourne University. He was twice successful in the Oxford and Cambridge Cup for men's eight at those championships.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Science from Melbourne University, Sir Roderick continued his studies and rowing at New College, Oxford. Sadly, his two years racing in the Oxford crews did not result in a win. He was President of the Club in 1957.
Sir Roderick maintained his interest in the sport throughout his life but his focus was demanded elsewhere in his busy business life.
