The 1959-60 Mercantile annual report recorded the following obituary of George Smith.
It is with regret we have to record the passing early this year of George W. Smith, a Vice-President of this Club.
His active rowing days were spent with the Footscray Rowing Club, where he was a successful oarsman and for many years a Life Member of that Club.
George joined Mercantile in the late 1920's, and for more than a decade was one of our leading and successful coaches. In later years he was a regular spectator at races on the Yarra, and maintained his interest in rowing to the end.
Rowing can ill afford to lose such a follower of the sport.
