Herman Schulze

Jeparit Rowing Club (VIC)

1887-1917

Herman Schulze was born and lived at Jeparit Victoria. He was a 28 year old farmer when he enlisted on 11th August 1915.

Whilst his enlistment papers showed his name as Hermann, his family asked that his memorial show his name as Herman.

He served in France and was wounded in action on 15th August 1916 and recovered.

Hermann was reported as missing on 12th May 1917 in France. His body was never found and a Court of Inquiry on 26th November 1917 found that Hermann, then a Lance Corporal, was killed in action on 3rd May 1917.

On 7th December 1917, his sister Miss T W Shultz write to authorities stating that a letter she wrote to her brother Herman was returned "stamped (Undeliverable, Killed in Action, return to sender). Can you not give us information if he has fallen of not"?
