J Herbert V Dehn

South Melbourne Rowing Club (VIC) now Albert Park South Melbourne Rowing Club (VIC)

James Herbert Vincent Dehn was born on 11th April, 1889 and lived at 66 Danks St, Albert Park.

He was a member of the South Melbourne club by the 1913-14 season, but has no recorded wins. 

Herbert enlisted on 21st August, 1914 as a driver. He served at Gallipoli and in France, was wounded three times while serving in the 8th Infantry Battalion and mentioned in despatches for a particularly brave action on 23 August 1918. Herbert returned to South Melbourne after the war, and spent many years on the committee, serving as the captain in the 1930s and as a Vice President in the 1950s.

Herbert married Gladys Bride in 1924 and they had two sons. Herbert lived a full life and passed away at the age of 80 on 13th September, 1969.
