Men’s Scull – Gold
Stuart Mackenzie
Mackenzie commenced his long and successful reign in European racing which included two European Championships and four Henley Silver Sculls.
The German sculler Klaus Von Ferson finished second and not the Russian favourite Viatscheslav Ivanov, the current Olympic and European Champion. Von Ferson defeated Ivanov in both the heat and final. In the heat, to the astonishment and satisfaction of the home crowd, Ivanov stopped rowing with 25 metres before the finish line. The local sculler had led throughout the race.
