1924 - Interstate Men's Sculling Championship - First

James commenced his rowing in sculls in 1914 winning novice single sculling races. In 1915 he won maiden single sculling races and broke into the senior ranks in 1919 when he won the Yarra Challenge Sculls at Henley on the Yarra. He won his first Victorian Scull Championship in 1920.
